This Masters course in Emergency Planning Resilience and Response will provide you with an opportunity for you to develop master’s level education in the concepts theories and academic skills for emergency planning, resilience, business continuity and disaster management and recovery .The course caters for professionals who may already be working in this field or those wishing to embark on a career in emergency planning. The course aims to offer a flexible approach to the subjects studied and those already working in this area will be able to develop further their knowledge skills and experience. The course will ensure you develop a sound working knowledge of the principles and practice of emergency planning and the underpinning policy. You will develop valuable skills in communication and strategic leadership. You will also develop a wide range of inter-personal skills for effective use in multi-agency teams. There will be opportunities to take part in exercises and training in simulated emergency settings with a wide range of professional and other Key Stakeholders and organisations involved in emergency planning.

You will study six 20 credit modules and conduct a 60 credit Master’s level piece of independent research. You may also use the accreditation of prior experience and learning process to credit appropriate experience or past level 7 credits for learning, towards the course. You will be able to study a range of subjects for the 60 credits at PG Certificate (Cert) level and 60 credits at PG Diploma (Dip) level

About this course

The course is composed of six 20 credit modules and a 60 credit Master’s level piece of independent research. Students may also use the accreditation of prior experience and learning (APEL) process to credit appropriate experience of past level 7 credits for learning towards the course.


The course is composed of three intermediate levels; the PG certificate and the PG diploma are composed of 60 credits each and consist of a range of subjects. In order to gain the full Masters a 60 credit independent study module must be studied for which there are three options.

The aim of this module is to provide you with depth knowledge of the research process and to acquire practical skills for the design and conduct of research studies, including data collection and analysis. You will plan a research study to be carried out independently, in fulfilment of the requirements of the Master's Dissertation. You will write a research plan in preparation for the development of the research proposal needed in your application for ethical approval of your study. You will gain a critical, depth knowledge of the methodologies and research methods you will need in order to write Chapter 3 (Methodology and Methods) of your Master's Dissertation.

This module provides an examination of the framework, legislation and guidance which forms the foundation of emergency planning, resilience and response within the UK whilst exposing key lessons which can be learnt from other countries and disasters. You will also examine the tools and intricacies of risk identification, assessment and management which form the foundation of planning for emergencies in the UK and discover concepts which challenge these processes. This module will also provide for the development of academic skills such as writing, referencing, reading, searching the literature and thinking critically and creatively.& nbsp; This will enable you to obtain the most from your studies, enable you to engage in mastering subjects across the field, and& nbsp;demonstrate your knowledge through activities and assignments.& nbsp;

During this module you will study the impacts of existing management and leadership within emergency management and explore what requirements might be necessary to adapt to a changing world.
