Module: 7HW011

Credits: 20

Period: 2

Type: Core

Locations: Wolverhampton City Campus

Health needs assessment is a systematic method for reviewing the health issues facing a population leading to agreed priorities and resource allocation that will improve health and reduce inequalities. It is a recommended public health tool to provide evidence about a population on which to plan services and address health inequalities. It provides an opportunity to engage with specific populations and enable them to contribute to targeted service planning and resource allocation and it provides an opportunity for cross-cultural partnership working and the development of creative and effective interventions (HDA, 2010). This module will enable you to critically assess and evaluate ways in which health and social needs are assessed. You will consider the theory and practice of health needs assessment and evaluation by critical examination of theoretical, conceptual and practical issues; some of the topics you will explore include Health Equity Audit, Health Economics and Health Informatics.

A key organisational challenge is to bring about beneficial change. Change for some organisations is in itself not enough and only transformation will do. Effective leadership of such processes is clearly of vital importance. The purpose of this module is to challenge managers and aspiring managers to consider the practical issues associated with effective change leadership from a range of different conceptual perspectives and so be better equipped within the work place.

Module: 7HR008

Credits: 20

Period: 2

Type: Core

Locations: Wolverhampton City Campus

This module introduces you to the range of perspectives which exist on what constitutes effective leadership in organisations. Taking a critical approach to classical and contemporary theories, models and frameworks of leadership, it evaluates the claims, prescriptions and evidence offered in support of a range of approaches. It also includes a consideration of issues related to leadership behaviour in organisations, such as power, authority, trust and politics, and considers the application of theory in practice.

The MSc Healthcare Leadership focuses on critical leadership skills and qualities and provides opportunities for a greater understanding of both sectors, mirroring the increased harmonisation and partnered working models in the NHS and social care contexts.

The programme is delivered by specialists from the Business School and the School of Health and Wellbeing, who are involved in significant advisory roles and research within health and social care locally, regionally and nationally, and who participate in national communities of practice – developing and sharing expertise across the UK.

You will leave the programme not just with a range of skills, but with the confidence to lead within the complexity of health and social care environments.

At the end of this course you, the student, will be able to:

  • Critically apply knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to a professional leadership role, within the health, health-related or social care sectors.
  • Critically debate the key concepts and theoretical positions that have been developed, or are developing, within leadership and professional development.
  • Reflect on the academic and practical application of leadership theories and practices in the health and social care context.
  • Analyse theory and context, delivering findings through effective presentation media, to become a confident, digitally literate and innovative health or social care leader.
  • Critically appraise professional standards within the health and social care sectors and recognise obligations to stakeholders, the profession and society.
  • Synthesise relevant critical thinking through academic research completing an independent research project/dissertation at masters level.
