Programme overview
This interdisciplinary programme will provide you with the skills, knowledge and expertise to become a practitioner in nanoscience, whether in industry or academia. As of 2016, all of our graduates have successfully progressed to full-time employment or further study, with just over 50 per cent obtaining PhD places in Bristol and other leading universities worldwide.
The programme is run by the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN), which engages with a network of over 100 academics from 15 departments in the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Biomedical Sciences. This rich and diverse community provides truly interdisciplinary training and research projects at the cutting edge of nanoscience.
The structure of the programme - featuring two short training projects and one extended research project - provides multiple opportunities for direct contact with leading academics and industry partners across a wide range of research areas. You will choose your extended research project after exploring BCFN's research network through your short projects and the teaching programme. Project titles in 2016-17 included ‘Ultra-thin Magnetic Films for Nanomagnetics applications’, ‘Nanoscale Bi/Sb Chalcohalides for Solar Energy Conversion’ and ‘Silk-Bone: a New Spin on Bone-tissue Engineering’.
Throughout the programme you will have opportunities to further your technical and professional development in research skills, effective presentations, scientific writing, teamwork, creativity and entrepreneurship.
