Course programme

The first three years of this four-year degree programme follow a similar structure to the BSc Geology with Geography, before allowing you to study advance Master’s modules in your fourth and final year.

Year 1

The first year enables you to build a strong foundation of knowledge through compulsory modules in Understanding the Dynamic Planet, physical and chemical processes in the Earth system, and Research and Field Skills. They will introduce you to a range of subjects you are unlikely to have come across until now, ensuring that you will be able to choose optional modules effectively in the following years.

Year 2

In this year you take modules on earth science skills, global tectonics and sedimentology, but alongside these you have freedom to tailor your course selecting optional subjects from a wide range of specialist modules, examples including geomorphology, geophysics and hydrogeology.

Year 3

The focus of your third year of study is a substantial independent research project, allowing you to investigate a specialist area of your own interest in depth. You will also have the opportunity to select subjects to study from a range of optional modules- including Earthquake and Volcanic Hazards, Paleoclimatology and Low Carbon Energy. Another free study module is also available.

Year 4

During your final year you will undertake a substantial research training project in a topic that matches your interests. You will also study advanced level subjects chosen from a wide range of optional modules, such as Research Topics in Earth Sciences and Stable Isotope Geochemistry.
