Course programme

This four-year course follows a similar structure to the MSci Geology with Geography degree, but with an additional year of study at an overseas university in Australasia, North America or Europe during the third year. The first year of this four-year course ensures you have the necessary building blocks to choose effectively from the wide range of courses on offer in the second and fourth years. You will be given an increasingly varied choice of modules throughout the degree programme so you are able to direct your own learning.

Year 1

The first year enables you to build a strong foundation of knowledge through compulsory modules in Understanding the Dynamic Planet, physical and chemical processes in the Earth system, and Research and Field Skills. They will introduce you to a range of subjects you are unlikely to have come across until now, ensuring that you will be able to choose optional modules effectively in the following years.

Year 2

In this year you take modules on earth science skills, global tectonics and sedimentology, but alongside these you have freedom to tailor your course selecting optional subjects from a wide range of specialist modules, examples including geomorphology, geophysics and hydrogeology.

Year 3 (Year Abroad)

After maintaining a good standard of academic performance during your first two years, you will spend your third year studying at one of our university exchange partners in Australasia, New Zealand, North America or Europe. We take into account your field of interest and placement preferences, and do our best to place you at the university of your choice. See the “Study Abroad” section below for more details.

Year 4

During your final year you will undertake a substantial research training project in a topic that matches your interests. You will also study advanced level subjects chosen from a wide range of optional modules, such as Research Topics in Earth Sciences and Stable Isotope Geochemistry.
