Introducing your course
Studying under the supervision of world-leading research staff, you will gain a full understanding of a variety of marine processes from waves, tides and ocean currents, to sediment transport, fisheries and marine ecosystems. You will continue to improve your French; particularly specialist science language and communication skills, making yourself highly employable with a range of transferable skills.
Three of the four years will be spent at the world-leading National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), with one-year being taught in French at the University of Bordeaux. The year in Bordeaux also gives you a choice of units some of which are not available in Southampton allowing you to discover a wide range of topics.
All of our Oceanography courses are accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Course programme
Year 1
You will take 5 compulsory modules which will enable you to place oceanography in a global context, plus a mathematics module from either SOES1010, MATH1004 or MATH1008 dependent on your mathematical background. You will also study a French language module (FREN9089 + 9090 or FREN9010 dependent on your French language background).
Semester One
If you have the International Baccalaureate, Standard Level Maths at grade 6 or higher you may consider selecting MATH 1004. If you have Standard Level Maths below grade 6 you should select SOES 1010. If you have A-Level qualifications then please click the individual module below for further advice. If you are uncertain then please contact the Programme Leader.

Year 2
During the second year you will continue with a common core of modules extending your knowledge of physical, chemical and biological oceanography, marine sedimentation and estuaries. The French language component in the second year is geared towards preparing you for the following year spent in Bordeaux.
Semester One
If you studied SOES1010 or MATH1004 in year 1, you must take SOES2028, otherwise you take one option from the lists. For the French language element, you will study either FREN9010 or FREN9011.

Year 3
The third year is undertaken at the University of Bordeaux-1. For administrative purposes students are enrolled on SOES3044 and SOES3043 which 'houses' modules taken. More detailed information on the specific modules you will be taking will be provided nearer the time.
Year 4
You will select ONE option from a number of advanced courses in physical, chemical or biological oceanography or marine geology. One quarter of your time will be dedicated to an independent research project in which you follow a line of research and study on a topic of special interest to you. The French language component (FREN9011 or FREN9012) in the final year is designed to build on the experience of your year in France and hone your language skills.
