Who is this course for?
Are you a guitarist, bassist, vocalist or drummer and are you are passionate about performing music, of any style? If you are also interested in studying popular music, or if you are looking to develop a career in the music industry as a singer, songwriter or musician, then this course is for you.

What are the entry requirements?
You should have 4 A-C GCSE grades ideally including English and Maths. If you do not have these specific GCSE results do still apply.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
BTEC National Certificate in Music.

Where can it lead?
You will be given the choice of progression once you have completed the course. Progression from the course will be to a higher level course at BA Hons Degree level, either within the ICMP or a University. Alternative progression routes could also include freelance playing of music, professional sessions employment or the creation of your own music promotions business.

What will I study?
You will study in a range of different ways, in classrooms, in studios and in auditoriums. You will study areas of composition writing, song writing, playing your instrument, using technology to enhance your musicianship, popular music as a business and popular music as a part of culture.

How will I be taught?
You will be taught by a range of professional musicians who are also committed to supporting new talent within education. You will be taught through demonstrations, technical instruction and specifically planned exercises to help improve your instrument playing technique. You will also be taught in group seminars, group lectures and through your own individual one to one sessions with lecturers.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through the observation and recording of your playing skills in performance by your lecturer or assessors. You will be assessed through formative tests and through the writing up of your research and analysis of the popular music industry and popular music history and culture.

What support is available while I am on the course?
If you are under 19 at the time of enrolment in September 2008 you will not be liable for any course fees. In reference to financial support you will be entitled to EMA and to apply to the Hardship Fund.
