Course programme

Music

Introduction

Our Music programme (either Single Honours Music or Joint Honours Music and a Modern Language) provides an up-to-date intellectual training through study of the historical, technical, analytical, compositional and performance aspects of music.

Teaching and Learning
We use lectures, seminars, tutorials and individual lessons (for performance units). Year one consists largely of lecture-based teaching to the whole year group (about 40 to 50 students), sometimes with back-up support in smaller groups. In years two and three, teaching is mainly by seminar (groups of around 12 to16), or by individual tutorial (for dissertations and composition portfolios). Every student is allocated a year tutor who has responsibility for overall progress. In the first year, students have an hour-long meeting with their tutor in every teaching week.

Assessment
You will be assessed by a mixture of coursework and written examinations. Typically each unit will be assessed 50% coursework, 50% examination. Other modes of assessment include solo and ensemble recital, extended dissertation or portfolio, and digital media (for units in electro-acoustic composition). You will be required to take part in certain workshops and master-classes, and to give oral presentations in seminars, but these are not formally assessed.
