About this course

Due to the nature of this course, you will need to be an accomplished performer and should be at least grade 5 standard or equivalent on your chosen instrument. You do not need to have any other formal music qualifications. It is a requirement that you complete an audition and basic music theory test prior to enrolment.

BTEC National Certificate Music (Performing)

WHY TAKE A BTEC NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN MUSIC? This vocational subject is aimed at experienced and talented performers who wish to further their skills while learning more about the musir,c industry. Many students have progressed to university to complete music performance and sound recording courses. Job roles can include performe producer, songwriter and music management, all of which are covered during your course at Priestley.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
This course is predominately centred on performance. You will develop your skills through regular instrumental lessons and regular rehearsals, all of which culminate in numerous live performances throughout the academic year. You will experience many aspects of music including song writing, composition, music through the decades and sound recording. Over the duration of the course you will also take on additional roles including marketing and production management. The idea is that you leave college with a greater understanding of all aspects of music.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will develop skills such as improvisation, interpretation and sightreading. You will develop your communication skills by working as an ensemble. You will build your confidence through solo and group performances. Your planning and organisational skills will be enhanced through units such as Planning a Music Project and Music in the Community.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Each of the modules is broken up into specific criteria that are assessed though many different ways including live performances, tutor reports of your contributions in lessons and rehearsals and, finally, your written coursework. Although there are no written exams, it is important to note that your written work is an essential part of the course.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Many other subject-related activities are offered such as music technology or music theory classes and college theatre productions. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend regular visits, workshops and residential trips throughout the year.
