Entry Requirements
Cost
It is expected that all A Level students will purchase the recommended A Level text to support their studies out of class time (approximately 25). You will have to provide your own headphones and a set of leads, probably for around 20. You will find that you also need to buy CDs to burn your work on to.
The Programme
This new Music Technology specification involves much practical work and encourages the cultivation of a
wide range of skills. Students will have opportunities to:
Sequence MIDI, sequence audio, record live instruments, produce CDs and compose using music technology.
It is also expected that students will develop a good understanding of the technical processes and principles
that underpin effective use of music technology and comment on them in writing.
The Programme Content
The AS programme consists of two units which will both be assessed externally:
Unit 1: Music Technology Portfolio 1.Students must complete three tasks which together make up the Music Technology Portfolio:
Task 1a: Sequenced Realised Performance
Task 1b: Multi-track Recording
Task 1c: Creative Sequenced Arrangement
Unit 2: Listening and Analysing:
Students are required to study the development of popular music styles from 1910 through to the present day. This is not intended to be a comprehensive study of every popular, jazz or rock music style, but an overview of the main styles and trends during the development of popular music. It will be assessed by a 1 hour 45 minute listening examination.

Progression / Careers
Music technology plays a key role in music across the world and some students will use this qualification to help them progress on to specific degree courses or into employment within the industry, such as record production or technical support for events. For others this will simply form part of their portfolio of qualifications which will help them gain entry to university. Most university courses are not specific about the subjects needed for entry and college staff can advise on this.
