This course is centred on Napoleon the 1st. We will visit some of the main events taking place under Napoleon’s reign and try to answer few questions still dividing historians today.

- speak about the rise and fall of Napoleon- discuss his influence on Modern history- analyse his relation with other countries- understand in more depth the man and leader.

This is a lecture, and is therefore tutor-led, nevertheless active participation is encouraged. You will also learn by reading chronological key points and quotations, looking at pictures and paintings, watching movies….

Course programme
- Role played by Napoleon during the French revolution and his rise to power. Did he fulfil the revolution aims or did he bury them ?
- Since France was nearly permanently at war under Napoleon we will look at how military campaigns and actually defeats ( Egypt, Russia …) were turned into propaganda coups contributing to Napoleon’s
legend.
- Did finally Napoleon lay down the foundation of modern France or did he just stand alone as a one off oddity in French history?
