About this course

The minimum age of entry is 16 years. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. Access to this qualification is open to all candidates above the age of 16; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to comply with the Health and Safety and assessment aspects of the qualification.

Aims and Objectives

The qualification aims to:

- provide an awareness of the legal requirements related to handling objects and moving people

- promote good practice in moving and handling techniques for objects and people

- enable candidates to develop the skills of risk assessment and problem solving

- reduce the risk of injury for those involved in the moving and handling of objects and people as far as possible

The objectives of the qualification are to help candidates to:

- understand the background to safer moving and handling

- undertake safer manual handling

- undertake the safer moving of people

Other Issues

The Level 2 Certificate in Safer Moving and Handling (including People) will help candidates to develop interpersonal skills and related skills associated with group activity and team working. Those involved in the safer moving of people will learn to respect people in care and understand their needs, particularly in terms of essential care values such as choice, dignity, independence, privacy, self determination and self-esteem. All candidates will be involved in issues, which are specifically covered, by UK Health and Safety legislation, much of which has been developed to meet the requirements of European directives.

Target Group

The qualification is available to those in work and those seeking to work in a diverse range of occupations where moving and handling may be required. It is particularly valuable to students in the care sector as a safety specific supplement to general care qualifications.

Entry Guidance

The minimum age of entry is 16 years. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. Access to this qualification is open to all candidates above the age of 16; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to comply with the Health and Safety and assessment aspects of the qualification.

In order to promote the safety of candidates, the College will ensure that each candidate completes a consent form to confirm that they are in an appropriate state of health to undertake the practical aspects of the assessment requirements. If a candidate has a known health or medical issue and is unsure whether they should carry out manual handling tasks, they should be advised to seek medical advice before undertaking this qualification. If a candidate is pregnant or has given birth in the last six months, manual-handling tasks could pose a risk to their health. In this instance candidates cannot undertake this qualification.

The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Safer Moving and Handling (including People) aims to provide progression towards:

- NVQs at Level 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care
