NEBOSH General Certificate

Who should attend?

Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of

organisations who need a broad understanding of

health and safety issues. The certificate helps them

manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH

Certificate as a first step on a career in health and safety.

It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for

further professional study.

Course content

The course covers the main legal requirements for

safety in the UK, a range of workplace hazards, and

methods of control. The Certificate syllabus is based on

the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO)

standards. These are reviewed regularly to keep up with

developments in the workplace and in legislation.

Unit 1 – Management of Health & Safety

• Health & safety foundations

• Policy

• Organising for Health & safety

• Promoting a positive health & safety culture

• Risk assessment

• Principles of control

• Monitoring, review and audit

• Incident and accident investigation, recording and

Reporting

Unit 2 – Controlling workplace hazards

• Movement of people – hazards and control

• Manual and mechanical handling hazards and control

• Work equipment hazards and control

• Electrical hazards and control

• Fire hazards and control

• Chemical and biological health, hazards and control

• Physical and psychological health, hazards and control

• Construction activities, hazards and control

The examinations consist of two 2 hour papers , one taken

in the morning and one in the afternoon. The practical test

can be taken at the delegates workplace or the training

venue and involves writing an assessment of the hazards

noted by the student. Successful candidates will be

awarded a National General Certificate on completion of the

examinations and practical assessment.

The Qualification

The NEBOSH Certificate is accepted by IOSH – the

Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in

meeting the academic requirements for Technician

Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by

The International Institute of Risk and Safety

Management (IIRSM) for associate membership.
