The NEBOSH General Certificate is accredited at Level 3 within the National Qualification Framework and also meets the academic requirements of IOSH for Technician membership (TechIOSH). The qualification is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (llRSM) for associate membership.
Some NEBOSH General Certificate courses are also delivered as e-learning or blended formats.
The NEBOSH General Certificate is divided into three units. Units NGC1 and NGC2 are generally taught units and are both assessed by written examination. The third NEBOSH unit, NGC3 is assessed by a practical examination. A brief overview of the units is given below, with further details in course overviews.
NEBOSH General Certificate Unit NGC1 - Management of health & safety, includes
- Foundations in Health & Safety; outlining the legal framework relating to health and safety management, as well as moral and economic drivers, and key elements of a health and safety management system
- Health & Safety Policy; key features and appropriate content.
- Organising for Health & Safety; the roles and responsibilities.
- Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture; health and safety culture and behaviours.
- Risk Assessment; including hazard identification and the need for assessing risks.
- Principles of Control; including hierarchy of risk reduction methods and common control measures.
- Monitoring, Review and Audit
- Incident and Accident Investigation, including Recording and Reporting.
NEBOSH General Certificate Unit NGC2 - Controlling workplace hazards, includes the following elements
- Movement of People and Vehicles - hazards and control
- Manual and Mechanical Handling - hazards and control
- Work Equipment - Hazards and control
- Electricity - Hazards and control
- Fire - Hazards and control
- Chemical and Biological Hazards – hazards and Control
- Physical and Psychological Health – hazards and Control
- Construction Activities - Hazards and control
NEBOSH General Certificate Unit NGC3 - Health and safety practical application. For this unit candidates are required to carry out an unaided inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards and then deciding whether they are adequately controlled. They then need to prepare a report to persuade management on remedial measures that need to be taken. Students will normally be required to complete the NGC3 assessment within 14 days (before or after) of sitting the examination for Units NGC1 and/or NGC2.
