Course programme

The course focuses on the typical areas to be found in the Nebosh, Controlling Work Place Hazards paper 2. We also will cover examination technique as well as covering past examination papers and enlighten delegates understanding of the use of Action Verbs.

The course will cover the salient points in the following areas:-

1) The Movement of People and Vehicles covering, common hazards, slips trips and falls, avoidance of collisions with pedestrians and vehicles, prevention of vehicles from overturning, occupational road risk.

2) Manual and Mechanical Handling in terms of manual handling injuries, main requirements of the the Manual Handling Regulations 1992, kinetic manual handling techniques, TILE, mechanical handling devices their hazards and how to control them, LOLER 1998, crane operations, slinging and signalling, accessories, maintenance and inspections, planning the lift.

3) Work Equipment (PUWER) including regulation 11, mechanical hazards, main requirements for fixed guards, maintenance regimes, accident prevention during maintenance, hazards associated with handheld tools.

4) Electrictiy including definitions of conductors, inslators, current, short circuit etc, maintenance and testing, lock off procedures, effects and treatment of electric shock, secondary hazards associated with electric shock, RCD, testing of equipment.

5) Fire including the main requirements of a fire risk assessment, the fire triangle, paths of fire, ignition sources, typical workplace fuels, role of the responsible person and competent person under the RRFSO, powers of fire brigade, classification of fires and how to extinguish them, control of substances, fire prevention, fire evacuation.

6) COSHH including, basic charchteristics of Dusts, gases, vapours, liquids, mists, fumes, fungi, moulds, bacteria and viruses. Different classifications of hazardous substances, their characteristics and how they effect the body with routes of entry. The ciliary escalator, nerotoxins, target organs, irritants. Asbestos and where it can be found in the workplace. Data sheets and WELS, STELS and LEV.

7) PPE

4) Physical and Psychological hazards including, DSE assessments, symptoms of RSI, WRULDS and HAVS and how to reduce risk exposure. The Effects of noise and the producers of noise and how to control noise and observe noise action levels. The two different sources and types of radiation and their control in the workplace. Identification and Control of Stress.

For examination techniques, we will explore the use of planning for success in terms of:-

1) Time management

2) Reading and understanding questions

3) Structuring your approach to answering the questions

The one day course will follow an interactive element using slide shows, the trainers and delegates experience to engage and reinforce this information. A Free booklet is provided with all relevant information to record and use as reference material during your revision.

Examination technique will incorporate the use of past examination papers under “exam” conditions. Delegates will be asked to complete questions and then a review of answers will take place, with analysis of where candidates may have gone wrong in interpreting the question wrongly.

Action Verbs will be explored and given a simplistic definition so that delegates can be more aware of how to answer questions during the examination.
