This four-day course will introduce you to the principles, frameworks, technologies and protocols used for network and service management in both telecommunication and internet service provider (ISP) networks.
During the course you'll:
look at the network and service management functional areas
discuss the manager-agent and distributed systems models
examine management technologies such as SNMP, CMIS/P and CORBA in detail
be introduced to the TMN hierarchical management framework
The course concludes with in-depth case studies of IP network configuration for traffic engineering (both intra- and inter-domain) and IP quality of service management.
It's run by UCL's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

About this course

On completion of this course, you should be able to:
understand network and service management principles and categorise relevant activities in the five functional areas
understand the details of the manager-agent and distributed system models
have an understanding of how Internet SNMP, OSI CMIS/P, OMG CORBA and web services are used for network and service management and understand the relevant strengths and limitations
understand how IP networks are traffic–engineered and provisioned (both intra- and inter-domain) in order to be able to cope with the expected traffic demand
understand how IP networks are monitored and continuously reconfigured in order to offer guaranteed quality of service to customers

The department's short courses/CPD modules are aimed at those working in the telecommunications industry such as researchers, engineers, IT professionals and managers.
They're particularly suited to graduates in electronic and electrical engineering, communications engineering and computer science who want to further their knowledge on a particular topic, or work towards a Master's degree.
You don't need to have any pre-requisite qualifications to take this course.

The course runs over four days, followed by a three-hour tutorial and an optional exam.
A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion for those who take the module but not the exam.
If you take and pass the exam you'll get a certificate stating this, which includes your pass level.
