This module enables students to gain knowledge and understanding of the care of an individual with neurological dysfunction alongside development of leadership and management skills. The role of the health care practitioner within various environments will be explored. Students will be supported to gain a deeper understanding and analysis of acute care. Associated therapeutic interventions are examined in relation to the management of physical symptoms, prevention of complications and provision of evidenced based practice. The function of the multi-professional team will be explored, including developing within specialist roles and accountability in practice.
Decision making will be discussed in relation to the management of the patient’s care including legal and ethical issues, use of protocols and resource allocation. Rehabilitation, education of patients and relatives and the importance of follow up and support groups will be considered. Students will be encouraged to consider how independent and innovative thinking can facilitate the above and will discuss strategies for implementing change in practice.
Students will be equipped with strategies that promote awareness of high quality care, which in-turn will influence patient safety and satisfaction. Students will be encouraged to explore underpinning theory related to all of the above issues. In addition, those attending this module will explore their own practice and critically reflect on improving care, specifically considering their own contribution to patient satisfaction, compassionate care and team performance.
