Course Details
There have been considerable legislative changes affecting the security industry (Private Security Act 2001). The legislation requires individuals working in the sector to be licensed. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is responsible for licensing and has specified the criteria for obtaining a licence, one of which is the achievement of a level 2 qualification.
The NOCN Level 2 Award in Security Guarding has been developed to meet the training and licensing requirements of the SIA for Security Guards.
The NOCN Level 2 Award in Security Guarding will contribute to the promotion of professional standards in the sector and the development of a fully qualified workforce of specialist operatives.

The qualification has the support of:

  • The Security Industry Authority.
  • SITO (the former National Training Organisation for the secure environment).
  • Training providers for the industry
  • Employers
  • Further Education colleges

The design of the Award is informed by a two year national pilot project run by NOCN in partnership with SITO.

Who is the qualification for?

  • New entrants to the industry.
  • Current Security Officers who require a licence and have no previous award/qualification which confers full or partial exemption.
  • Current Security Officers who are exempt from SIA Part 1 training (roles and responsibilities) but who require both SIA Part 1 assessment and SIA Part 2 training and assessment (communication & conflict management).
  • Current Security Officers who are exempt from SIA Part 1 training andassessment but who require SIA Part 2 training and assessment (communication and conflict management).

Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years old to access this qualification

Course Content
The qualification is knowledge-based and covers:

Underpinning knowledge of the role and responsibilities of Security Officers (Part 1 of SIA core competency training).

Underpinning knowledge of Conflict Management (Part 2 of SIA core competency training).

This underpinning knowledge is mapped to National Occupational Standards and will provide a platform for progression to further qualifications such as NVQs.

Assessment

The NOCN Level 2 Award in Security Guarding is composed of a total of 2
mandatory units. Both mandatory units must be completed by learners.
The knowledge and understanding they assess is essential for achievement of the qualification.

Each unit will be assessed by an externally set written examination, in accordance with the assessment specifications set by the SIA.

Learners must successfully complete both units to achieve the qualification unless they have grounds for exemption..

The units are:

  • Roles and Responsibilities of Security Officers
  • Communication & Conflict Management
