Brief Description of the Course This qualification has been developed as a compulsory pre-requisite for entry onto the Farriery Apprenticeship. It delivers the foundation skills required for recognising basic blacksmith's tools, understanding how the forge hearth works, and introducing the practical blacksmithing skills of forging, forming, cutting, and joining.

The qualification is available to candidates aged 16 years and over. It is primarily for those who wish to develop a career in farriery (for which this qualification is a pre-requisite) or Hobby blacksmithing, also those who wish to develop forging skills in conjunction with existing professional abilities. Eg. Engineers or metalwork artists

This qualification is recognised throughout the UK. Positioned within the national qualifications framework at level 2, the qualification provides an accredited qualification in forgework. It is recognised as a compulsory entry requirement for any student wishing to take a Farriery Apprenticeship

Entry Criteria:

The minimum entry requirements are currently either:

• 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above, which must include English Language, Mathematics & Science (Scottish, Northern Ireland, and EU equivalents may apply)

• All candidates between 16 to 18 years on application must have GCSE passes at grade C or above in English Language and Maths. Functional skills Level 2 are not acceptable for this age group.

• An NVQ Level 2 which includes a science module and the Level 2 Key/Functional Skills of Communication and Application of Number / English and Maths if over 18

• A BTEC First Diploma which includes a science module and the Key/Functional Skills Level 2 if over 18

• Equivalent qualifications may apply, please contact the Myerscough College admissions department. It is the responsibility of each applicant to provide proof that any qualifications held are equivalent to or higher than the specified minimum educational entry requirements

• All candidates must achieve the NPTC Forging Certificate

• Please be aware that we cannot accept Adult Numeracy or Adult Literacy level 2 as an equivalent to the GCSE but can accept Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths mandatory requirement if over 18

• Forge assessment will be required as well as a formal interview and written exam on basic horse anatomy

• Recommend some work experience with an ATF/Registered Farrier for planned career in Farriery.

List of Units

UNIT 1: Forge Hearth Operation, Basic Maintenance and Control

• The identification and operation of solid fuel forge hearths or gas furnaces.
• Safe working practices when operating solid fuel forge hearths or mobile gas furnaces.

UNIT 2: Practical forgework

• Use the following techniques appropriately and safely: -basic forging -basic forming -basic cutting -basic joining
• Produce a portfolio of forging techniques

UNIT 3: Using and maintaining Blacksmith's Tools

• The identification and use of range of blacksmiths tools.

Assessments: Candidates must complete the following:

• A single multiple choice test via the City & Guilds Global online Assessment System. (GOLA) The test includes 30 questions and the candidate must achieve a minimum of 70% correct answers.
• A portfolio of evidence that is produced during the candidates own time. This includes all the mandatory test pieces from the current forging exercise booklet and one none mandatory piece.
• A practical examination that will take place under examination conditions. This will require the candidate to produce two test pieces from the current forging booklet, one of which will either be the Set Hook or the Bow Shackle. The exam will not exceed two hours.
• Candidates must successfully achieve all three assessment components to pass. No candidate failing the exam will be allowed to retake the exam within one month of failing.
• Candidates who pass the GOLA test but fail the practical exam / portfolio will not have to re-sit the GOLA test and vice versa, as long as all assessment components are achieved within 3 years of registration.
• However, candidates failing either the practical exam or portfolio will be required to re-sit both components. The portfolio of a failed candidate will be retained by the college or marked so that the pieces are not reoffered at a future date.

Possible Careers / Jobs Students passing this course will have the qualification to become an apprentice farrier.
