Minimum requirements  

MSc: Medical degree with minimum of two years' post-qualification clinical experience.

PG Dip, PG Cert: Graduates in medicine, physics, nursing, radiography or other medically-related subjects who have working experience in healthcare.

GMC registration considered highly desirable.

Personal Statement Yes

A personal statement of up to 4,000 characters (maximum 2 pages) is required


Previous Academic Study Yes A copy (or copies) of your official academic transcript(s), showing the subjects studied and marks obtained. If you have already completed your degree, copies of your official degree certificate will also be required. Applicants with academic documents issued in a language other than English, will need to submit both the original and official translation of their documents.
References Yes Two references are required with at least one academic. Professional references will be accepted if you have completed your qualifications over five years ago.
Other Optional You may wish to include a CV (Resume) or evidence of professional registration as part of your application.

Course detail Description

This course draws on professional expertise from many disciplines. Our lectures will instruct you in clinical practice, radiopharmaceutical, scientific and regulatory issues in nuclear medicine, as well as providing a solid foundation in diagnostic nuclear oncology and radionuclide therapy. The course features practical components, ranging from clinical observations, audit, physics and radiopharmacy experiments and original research

This course will develop your skills so that you can provide safe, high-quality nuclear medicine services.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

If you are an MSc student, you will have 222 hours of lectures. You will undertake a work placement and we expect you to undertake 10 hours of self-study each week.

If you are a PG Dip student, you will have 174 hours of lectures. We expect you to undertake 10 hours of self-study each week.

If you are a PG Cert student, you will have 120 hours of lectures. We expect you to undertake 10 hours of self-study each week.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

We will assess you through a variety of methods, including:

  • unseen written exams
  • coursework
  • practical logbooks
  • written thesis.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course modules change.

Extra information

This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London St Thomas’ Campus. All teaching materials are accessible on line via the KEATs eLearning platform to support distance learning and revision. Lectures are delivered at St Thomas’ Hospital with a short mini module at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Work placements are usually undertaken in the students’ own institution (UK students) or in major London teaching hospitals.

Structure

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take:

  • MSc – modules totalling 195 credits
  • PG Diploma – modules totalling 120 credits
  • PG Cert – modules totalling 60 credits.
Required Modules

If you are an MSc student, you are required to take all of the modules below.

If you are a PG Dip student, you are required to take the first two modules. You may then choose one module from the next two, and another module from the two after.

If you are a PG Cert student, you are required to take the first two modules, and then choose one from the next two. You will not take either of the last two.

  • Clinical Practice in Nuclear Medicine (30 credits)
  • Radiopharmaceutical & Regulatory Issues in Nuclear Medicine (15 credits)
  • Scientific Basis of Nuclear Medicine (15 credits) - Taken in your first or second year if you are a part-time student.
  • Diagnostic Nuclear Oncology & Radionuclide Therapy (15 credits) - Taken in your first or second year if you are a part-time student.
  • Practical Nuclear Medicine (60 credits) - Taken in your second year if you are a part-time student.
  • Nuclear Medicine Research (60 credits) - Taken in your second year if you are a part-time student.

Part time PG Dip students should plan to take at least 60 credits each year.
