Course programme

Modules in the first year

The first year of the programme is unique in that it provides you with an introduction to the theory and the practice of Adult, Mental Health, Child and Public Health Nursing. As well as examining these areas through academic study, you will gain invaluable practical experience by completing 3 placements in each of these fields of nursing practice.

  • 40 credits - Principles of Nursing
  • 40 credits - Health and Wellbeing
Modules in the second year

In year 2 you will focus on the study and practice of your first chosen field. All placements will be related to field 1 development.

Core modules

  • 20 credits - Promoting Health and Self-Management
  • 30 credits - Clinical Decision Making
  • 40 credits - Therapeutic Nursing for Children
  • 30 credits - Evaluating Nursing Care for Children
Modules in the third year

In year 3 you will continue to study field 1, however the main focus of year 3 is on the development of therapeutic nursing and practice in the second chosen field of practice. All placements are taken within the second field of practice.

Child (Field 1) and Mental Health (Field 2)

  • 40 credits - Clinical Assessment, Diagnostics and Decision Making in Complex Children's Nursing Care
  • 30 credits - Applied Therapeutic Mental Health Nursing Care
  • 30 credits - Evaluating Mental Health Nursing Care
  • 20 credits - Creating and Applying Evidence

Modules in the fourth year

In year 4 you will consolidate your learning in both fields and complete a leadership and management placement in each field of practice. During this year you will work with a team of students to produce a health and social care enquiry which may meet a number of purposes, including audit, quality enhancement and care improvement.

  • 40 credits - Health and Social Care Enquiry
  • 40 credits - Advancing Clinical Assessment, Diagnostics and Decision Making in Mental Health Nursing
