Course programme

Course detail Description

Our Mental Health course equips you with both the practical skills and the theoretical understanding of how to care for people effectively. Being in the heart of London, you’ll come across a really diverse mix of patients and situations. So when you leave King’s, you’ll be ready to take on any challenge.

Graduating students will possess the knowledge, skills and values to perform competently with a range of clients/patients and presentations, both in hospitals and in community settings. They will also develop skills in planning, leading and evaluating high quality care to clients/patients, their families and carers and to work effectively with inter-professional and inter-agency teams.

As you’d expect from a mental health course, we’re committed to supporting you. Our staff and student wellbeing research project helps us develop new ways to improve welfare.

Location

A lot of your time will be spent on placements at hospitals around London. We’ll cover the theory side of your work with lectures and seminars at King’s too. Teaching happens at our campuses, including:

  • Guy’s
  • Waterloo
  • Denmark Hill
  • St Thomas’

Course purpose

The overall aims of the programme are to enable graduates to acquire advanced understanding, knowledge and skills in nursing in order that they may deliver, develop, lead and research healthcare practice. In addition, the programme aims to ensure that nurses who graduate are skilled, competent and compassionate professionals who have satisfied the academic and clinical requirements and standards stipulated in the NMC standards of proficiency and the academic requirements of King's College London for the award of a Masters degree.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

Many of our students work or have families. So we try to be accommodating with teaching schedules, often keeping your commitment to three days a week. It’s a demanding course, but we’re sure you’ll find it’s worth it!

Half of your time will be spent gaining practical experience on placements. The other half will be learning the theory – through lectures, seminars, simulations, and private study.

Our teaching staff play to their strengths. So every topic you’ll learn about will be taught by a specialist with real expertise in that area.

Assessment

We know that everyone has their own way of learning so we assess your work in different ways depending on the module. Sometimes this might be an exam, sometimes a presentation, a practical assessment, or dissertation.

Extra information

Please Note: The MSc with Registration courses have now replaced the PG Dip with Registration that were discontinued for 2019 entry.

Student-centred learning is pivotal to our philosophy, and our teaching methods support and encourage self-development and awareness through reflection on experience. We utilise practitioners, researchers and lecturers to deliver high-quality research-based teaching.
