Suitable for: Edexcel NVQs in Health and Social Care have been developed in line with the National Occupational Standards for Health and Social Care developed by Skills for Care and Development and Skills for Health. The NVQ at Level 2 is the required qualification for 50% of the workforce in regulated care services. It is considered to be the minimum qualification required by a care worker. The NVQ will be appropriate for those working in private care homes and homes run within the public health systems.

Course programme

Health & Social Care NVQ is designed for staff who deliver physical, emotional, or enabling care to service users, whether in the public, private or voluntary sectors. This includes both direct care, where the focus is hands-on care (doing things for the service user) and enablement care, where the focus is on the development and maintenance of the service user's independence (supporting and enabling service user to do things for themselves).

It is important to note that the qualification is applicable wherever care is delivered including hospitals, the client's own home, clinic, residential homes, nursing homes, day centres and group homes.

What is an NVQ?

An NVQ is a nationally recognised qualification. It shows that you are able to work to a set national occupational standard. are qualifications which assesses someone's competence in a work situation. This NVQ reflects 'best practice' and are based on National Occupational Standards written by the particular employment-led body that represents your work area. In social care in England, this is Skills for Care. The qualification is expected to reflect the skills, knowledge and understanding an individual possesses in relation to a specific area of work.

We deliver the underpinning knowledge either at the workplace or in the class rooms depending on each learners circumstances.

Entry Requirement(s)

There are no formal qualifications required to do the course. However, it offers a formal qualification which can be achieved by those already working in the care sector.

Qualification Structure

The qualification is made up of 6 units - 4 mandatory units and 2 optional units. You must complete all 6 units to achieve the full qualification.

The mandatory units are:

  • Communicate with and complete records for individuals
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
  • Develop your knowledge and practice
  • Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals


Optional units, two from:

  • Support individuals in their daily living
  • Support individuals to meet their personal and domestic needs
  • Provide food and drink for individuals
  • Help individuals to eat and drink
  • Help address the physical comfort need of individuals
  • Support individuals with their personal care needs
  • Assist in the administration of medication
  • Support individuals prior to, during and after clinical procedures
  • Contribute to moving and handling of individuals
  • Support individuals who are distressed
  • Receive and pass on messages and information

Delivery and Assessment

The NVQ in Health & Social Care Level 2 is delivered wholly in the workplace. You will be allocated a personal assessor and supplied with all the necessary reading and assessment materials. You can complete it while you are working without needing to attend classes(depending on the your circumstances), sit exams or study for written tests. Learners work through the support materials and complete activities and assessments for each unit. The tutor/assessor will support candidates with these and also oversee learners carrying out practical tasks in the workplace. Your tutor/assessor will provide personal tutorial support at pre-arranged times or through phone call or email.

Once the level 2 Health & Social Care portfolio is completed it is checked by an internal verifier, and then checked by an External Verifier from the awarding body Edexcel.

If the evidence is satisfactory the candidate is then awarded an NVQ in Health & Social Care Level 2 certificate. Successful completion of this course will lead to NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care.

Progression routes

On successful completion of NVQ Level 2 Health and Social Care, dependent on your work role, candidate could progress to NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care.
