Is the course for me?
The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Bench Joinery is a measure of competence of an individual's capability to carry out a range of work to the performance criteria which have been agreed by the bench joinery industry. Each NVQ is made up of a number of individual ‘units of competence'.
This is a ‘work based' qualification and is only accessible to those employed in the bench joinery industry.
The NVQ comprises:
Core Units
Occupation-specific Units (optional and mandatory)
Assessment of work carried out in the work place
A portfolio of work carried out in the work place
An H/S test
What does the course involve?
You will Learn about:

How will I learn?
You will learn in a variety of ways:
On the job training by employer
Group and individual study at college
Work based assessment
Practical assessments
Written Assignments
Oral questioning at the end of each practical assessment
The use of on-line facilities
Considerable home study is required along with completely a portfolio of evidence showing the relevant skills gathered in the work place.
The college element of the NVQ consists of a challenging series of College set practical assessments as well as CITB/C&G written assignments, which consolidate the theory gained during group and individual study with the communication skills necessary to implement good working practices in the bench joinery industry.
What will I need for the course?
Steel toe boots or shoes (when in the workshops), all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied as by the College.
Black or Blue pen for all written work
2H or 3H pencil for all drawing and practical assessments, an eraser and pencil sharpener.
All other drawing and marking equipment will be supplied as and when required.
All materials, hand tools and Portable Power Tools will be supplied by the College.
What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?
This is a nationally recognised qualification that can lead on to managerial professional Level with further experience and training.
What qualifications or experience do I need to get on the course?
Employment in the bench joinery industry is essential, qualified to Level 2 (NVQ) in Bench Joinery. Good English and maths skills are an advantage.
Total commitment to work hard and meet the required standards in all areas of the course and a commitment in gathering the relevant ‘work based evidence'.
Length and start date of the course:
The duration is for ten weeks of two week blocks over the course of one year.
