The NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a foundation degree-level qualification, created for people whose responsibilities include developing and implementing day-to-day health and safety procedures within their workplace.
NVQs are the UK's premier vocational qualifications, ideal if you prefer a practical, evidence-based approach to learning that takes place within your working environment - as an alternative to academic study.
The practical, evidence-based and flexible nature of the NVQ course means that there are no exams or classroom components. It is therefore ideal for candidates who wish to continue working while studying.
Completing the NVQ Level 5 demonstrats the ability to apply theoretical knowledge of the health and safety field to the real-world environment of a workplace in an effective manner.

Course programme
Course ProgrammeStudy is work-based, and your tutor support is done remotely which means that NVQ Level 5 courses can be undertaken anywhere in the world.
Phoenix will allocate a dedicated course manager to you for the duration of the course, who will arrange to conduct your initial assessment and induction. This can take place face-to-face, by telephone or online.
NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is a distance learning and assessment programme, with your work and evidence submitted electronically - either via a cloud-based system or by email. Support and training from your manager are provided principally through telephone calls, Skype calls and emails. Your course manager is a dedicated resource, always ready to mentor you and offer help and advice on a one-to-one basis.
There are eleven mandatory modules to complete before the NVQ Level 5 Diploma can be awarded, these align with the 11 learning outcomes.
There are also three elective units, which are optional and allow learners to demonstrate their competence in more specific occupational health and safety areas:
- Influence improvements in health and safety practice
- Manage contractors to ensure compliance with health and safety
- Develop and implement the health and safety induction process
Candidates who wish to gain IOSH chartered membership must also complete a further unit:
- Professional development and ethics in health and safety management
Courses are generally completed over a 15 to 18-month period. Some candidates fit it into a year, while others take longer than 18 months. Additional support can be purchased if more time is needed.
AssessmentsSelf-assessment
Before starting the programme, you will be asked to complete a self-assessment to identify:
- Specific training needs
- Support and guidance requirements
- Units that have already been completed or existing credits that have been accumulated
This assessment helps to establish whether you require any additional training before tackling the units. If necessary, you will need to develop a plan with your manager to gain competence in the relevant areas before attempting the units.
Assessment & portfolio
Each candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that they have achieved all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.
As you gather evidence for each of the eleven units, you will go through it with your assessor who will ensure that you are meeting all the requirements. Once the assessor is satisfied, your work will be forwarded to the invigilators.
Your dedicated course manager will work with you to ensure that every piece of work you submit meets the standard required; we will not submit any work that we believe might not lead to a pass.
