CROP PRODUCTION
Who is the programme for? This programme is for anyone who is interested in growing crops commercially, or for people who would like to enhance their career prospects within the industry. Unemployed adults may be able to study the "Routes to Success" pathway which means they may be entitled to an additional training payment and help with travel costs.
What will I study? There are 9 units to be studied of which 6 are core units and where the 3 optional units can be selected from 8:- Core Units: * Maintain health and safety within the workplace * Maintain effective working relationships * Clear and prepare sites for planting crops * Set out and establish crops * Monitor and maintain growth and development * Monitor presence of pests, diseases and disorders and assist with their control Optional Units (choose 3 of the following) * Monitor environmental conditions * Propagate plants by vegetative methods * Propagate plants from seed * Harvest and prepare intensive crops * Identify, collect and prepare plants for despatch * Maintain and repair structures and surfaces * Prepare growing media
Entry to the Programme?
How is it assessed? The programme is continually assessed by a range of methods which will include projects, assignments and an assessment of your practical performance. There are no examinations at the end of the programme.
Future prospects? Upon successful completion of the programme you could study NVQ Horticulture at Level 3. Employment opportunities include working for commercial growers, working under glass and working in polythene tunnels.
When will the programme start? You can enrol on this programme at any time of the year.
How long will it take? You can choose to attend from one of the following:- * 2.5 days per week for 36 weeks * 1 day per week for 72 weeks * 2 evenings per week for 72 weeks
What about the Money? If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees. If you are over 19 years of age
How do I apply? Complete an application form and return it to Student Services, you will then be asked to attend College for an interview. If you are over 19
