Ocean Science encompasses the study of all aspects of the global marine environment, from estuaries and coasts to the deep ocean. It involves the application of specialist scientific disciplines (biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics) to observe and to understand the diverse and often complex processes governing the Earth Ocean Atmosphere system.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Write logical, well structured scientific essays drawing upon appropriate information from the scientific literature.

Use library facilities to undertake literature searches.

Be able to write abstracts of scientific papers.

Foster a scientific mindset and ability to present arguments in a coherent manner.

Be able to give short oral presentations using appropriate visual aides within a given time limit.

Produce scientific figures of a professional standard.


The course is ideal preparation for careers in research, environmental impact assessment, hydrographic surveying, water supply and offshore industries, coastal authorities, government advisory bodies, the scientific media, ecotourism and other leisure industries and pressure groups.

320 280 points at A2/AS level (or equivalent) usually including two science subjects (Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science), plus Grade C in GCSE Maths, Double Award Science and English.
We consider Access and BTEC Extended National Diploma applicants and mature students on an individual basis.

In addition there is a compulsory dissertation module which will help you develop independent study and research skills.
