To equip the Offshore First Aider to be able to provide on site first aid care and general support to the offshore medic. An offshore First Aider should be able to assist in the management of serious incidents involving multiple casualties and be trained to escort a sick or injured person being evacuated ashore. And they must be able to:· Deal with any specific hazard in the workplace· Recognise major illnesses and take appropriate action· Recognise minor illnesses and take appropriate action· Manage the transportation of a casualty, as required by the circumstances of the workplace.· Communicate and delegate promptly and effectively in an emergency
NBRefresher training must be completed within three years. The First Aider will have to re-sit the full 4-day course should their certificate expire.
Course Duration
4 days (30 hours contact as stipulated in the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations 1989).
Contents
Each student must demonstrate that they are able to:· Act safely, promptly and effectively with emergencies in that work· Use first aid equipment, including the use of defibrillators, manual suction devices, oropharyngeal airways, oxygen and entonox· Understand the duties of employers and the legal framework applicable to the offshore environment· Maintain simple factual records on what they have done with regard to any treatment or management of an emergency· Recognise the importance of personal hygiene in first aid procedures They must also be able to deal with a casualty who:· Requires cardiopulmonary resuscitation· Is unconscious· Is bleeding or wounded· Is suffering from shock· Is suffering from an injury to bones, muscles or joints· Has been burned or scalded· Has an eye injury· Has been overcome by gas or fumes· May have been poisoned or exposed to a harmful substance in the offshore environment
