Course programme

Year One

You will study six taught modules followed by a dissertation.

Oil, Gas, Mining and Investment Law I

Oil, Gas, Mining and Investment Law II

These core modules introduce you to the political and economic background within the petroleum and mining industry, as well as other major energy infrastructure projects. You will explore the international legal framework for transnational foreign investment and the general policy and legal issues related to the international regulation of such investment.

You will begin by developing your understanding of the economic, political and legal relationship between States, public and private international finance institutions, and multinational energy and mining corporations. The second module moves on to discuss both regulatory and litigation aspects of investment disputes within the petroleum, mining and other energy infrastructure projects using examples drawn from across the world.

International Commercial Transactions

This module facilitates a wide angled critical appreciation of the essential functional elements of any business to business contractual relationship concluded across international border in the so-called global village. The module promotes critical functional analysis of the core legal components of transnational deals and a comparative evaluation of contrasting approaches to the harmonisation of laws for transnational deals.

Year Two

Oil, Gas and Mining Environmental Law II

Oil, Gas and Mining Environmental Law II

These modules focus on international environmental law developments that directly relate to the regulation of both private and state-owned energy, petroleum and mining companies. You will trace the environmental impacts of each formative stage of the energy, petroleum and mining industries: in particular introducing the contextual, underpinning frameworks in which these industries operate.

You will begin by studying the international law principles surrounding the petroleum and mining industries. The second module moves on to consider the legal aspects of development of industrial installations, in particular as they relate to jurisdictional and environmental impact issues. You will also choose two modules from other subject areas. We strongly advise you to take modules from our International Trade and Commercial Law options, which are highly applicable to the oil, gas and mining industries.

International Competition Law

This module aims to support students in acquiring a critical understanding of the role, significance and basic structure of competition law in the context of increasing global trade and international economic integration. Competition law, (also called antitrust law), exists at national and regional levels. Laws in two leading competition law jurisdictions in the world, the United States of America (Federal) and the European Union, are focussed on with the aim of fostering critical analysis of the aims of competition law, the principal concepts underpinning competition law, how competition laws are structured and key practices (such as leniency or amnesty programmes) of agencies tasked with enforcing competition law.

On completion of the taught modules you will begin work on your dissertation. The dissertation is an extended piece of academic work, independently researched and written. You will be supported in your work by one-to-one supervision from a tutor expert in the chosen field. Subject to academic suitability and the availability of an appropriately expert tutor, you may select your own area of study for the dissertation phase of the course.
