About this course
There are no formal qualification requirements. Candidates should have a strong interest in the area of painting and decorating. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the work based learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy. This is programme is designed to give the learner the relevant training and education required to become a successful and competent painter and decorator. Learning through practical and theory sessions at the College is teamed with work based experience and training in order to achieve a Diploma level 2 alongside an NVQ Level 2 in Painting and Decorating.
Course Content
NVQ and Diploma in Painting and Decorating. Units include:
- How to Prepare Surfaces for Decoration
- How to Apply Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
- How to Apply Standard Papers to Walls and Ceilings
- How to Produce Specialist Decorative Finishes
- How to Apply Water-Borne Paint Systems Using High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) Spray Equipment
- How to Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platforms
As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths.

What can I do next?
Career pathways may include working on new builds and refurbishments, from small domestic projects to major ones such as public buildings. Progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.

ready to complete your apprenticeship with.
