On this course we will examine ways of representing the human figure while building confidence in handling paint in figure and portrait painting. We will consider different methods of painting, such as coloured under painting, layering, 'scumbling' and explore distortion, balance and rhythm. A variety of poses and models will be used, to investigate painting techniques that free up handling but also develop control. There will be exercises and quick sketches leading to a more considered piece in the latter part of the course when a pose will be retained over a number of weeks.
