Course programme

Make a work ‘Like the Old Masters’

You will make your own canvas from scratch; you will make your own paint from scratch; you will make a brush from scratch; just like Goya or Rembrandt would have done! Then you will make a painting that is ‘truly all your own work’.

I will provide raw earth pigments from various sources and we will each make a different colour and then share them between us.

I will then show you how to prepare a canvas from raw cotton cloth, rabbits skin size, gesso and stretch it.

Finally I will show you how to make a long handled hog hair brush absolutely from scratch using goose quill and silk.

All this can be achieved in two days so on the third day we will go into the countryside surrounding the studio and paint a landscape from life.

As the workshop progresses I will introduce you to the history of all the pigments we are using and many more besides. You may be interested in adding a day and visiting the Ochre mines at Clearwell in the Forest of Dean which is about an hours drive from here. We will be using some pigments from there.

This covers the use of the studio and equipment, tuition fee, all the materials required to make one canvas, one lot of paint and one brush. Lunch, teas and coffees will also be provided in the price. You will be able to borrow or buy, at very reasonable prices, any other materials you might require.

There is a variety of accommodation in the area. If you need a list please let me know.

Sorry I cannot take credit card payments.
