Course programme

The aim of this module is to provide students with the tools to analyse and investigate how nineteenth-century Paris witnessed an explosion of creativity as writers, painters, photographers, musicians and artists in every genre sought to give expressive form to the nature of modern life they saw developing around them. Students will explore close reading of texts, art works and musical pieces and establish how this critical approach can open up the questions and values of the era. Students should demonstrate an understanding of the artistic, literary, architectural, musical and political theories of the age. The following will be considered in class and all texts will be considered in translation.

  • Paris Capital of the Nineteenth Century, Walter Benjamin The arcades project
  • Honoré de Balzac A Harlot High and Low
  • Romanticism in Music, Hector Berlioz
  • Poetry Romanticism and reactions (Hugo, Baudelaire, Rimbaud)
  • Modern visions, Photography, Realism, Impressionism
  • Gustave Flaubert A sentimental education : the story of a young man
  • The Paris Commune, Manifesto Of The Paris Commune's Federation Of Artists
