All learners will need to complete an application prior to enrolling.
A Level 2 Literacy or a Grade C or above in GCSE must have been achieved.
Potential students who have not achieved this will be invited for an initial assessment to find out their current level and will be directed to study a basic skills course towards achieving their Level 2 in Literacy.

Course Description
The course will develop your ability to construct effective sentences, to plan, paragraph and shape an essay, to respond to a variety of literature and to communicate effectively in spoken English. Classes begin in September, November and March.
Course Structure
Assessment consists of:
- 20% orals - assessed by class tutor
- 20% written assignments - assessed by class tutor
- 60% end of year exams - two externally set and marked timed examinations
The literature includes short stories, poems, a Shakespeare play (currently Romeo and Juliet), and the work of one pre-20th Century author.
The oral discussions and presentations are designed to demonstrate your ability in communicating with others in a variety of situations.

Course Career Prospects
Your career prospects will be improved a great deal. Many areas of employment require proficiency in English Language and set GCSE grade C as one of the minimum requirements. It can also be used for admission to level 3 Further Education Programmes.
