Course Description
The AQA GCSE qualification develops language skills in a variety of contexts. In addition to demonstrating the core skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing the language, students can maximise achievement through the flexible unitised structure.

These qualifications are intended for use by a wide variety of learners who have studied the language previously to a Level 2 standard and are ready for formal examination. The qualification is suitable for:
  • Adults in part-time provision
  • Adults in the workplace
  • Adults in full-time learning
  • 16-19 learners in schools and colleges who wish to study a language
  • alongside their academic or vocational qualifications.

Course Structure
The course lasts for one academic year and is suitable for people who have achieved a level 1/2 qualification or studied the language for approximately 4 years. The course involves revision and preparation for formal examination in all core language skills: i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing leading to examinations in May/June.

Course Entry Requirements
All learners will need to complete an application and interview prior to enrolling. For continuing students, re-enrolment arrangements will be made via your course tutor. These courses would be ideal for anyone with prior knowledge of the target language wishing to obtain a formal, recognised qualification. For learners who have some prior knowledge but no record of achievement, entry would require a placement test to assess the level of ability in using the target language.

Course Progression
This qualification encourages progression to the NOCN Level 3 Award and Certificate in Language Skills (subject to availability). Alternatively, a student may wish to progress to A Level Programmes (subject to availability).

Course Career Prospects
  • Acquisition of a language alongside vocational or academic skills can enhance career prospects in globalised economies. Employers are increasingly seeing language acquisition as an invaluable skill in response to the challenge of flexibility and mobility in the labour market.
