Part Time BTEC HNC in Engineering (Mechanical or Manufacturing)

Course Description:
This programme is ideal for students working within an engineering industry who wish to progress in their career and study at a higher education level in Technical Engineering.

Programme Content
The HNC is a ten unit course, five units are completed each year. We offer a Mechanical HNC and a Manufacturing HNC within the course framework. The first year is common to both options and comprises of the following subject units:
  • Engineering Science
  • Analytical Methods (Mathematics)
  • Materials Engineering
  • Engineering Design
  • Business Management Techniques

At the start of the second year, students choose either:

MECHANICAL HNC - Comprising five units from the following:
  • Mechanical Principles (compulsory unit)
  • Project (compulsory unit)
  • Engineering Thermodynamics
  • Advanced CAD Techniques
  • Project management
  • Health & Safety and Risk Assessment
  • Quality Assurance & Management


MANUFACTURING HNC - Comprising five units from the following:
  • Project (compulsory unit)
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Project Management
  • CAD/CAM
  • Quality Assurance & Management
  • Advanced CAD Techniques
  • Health & Safety and Risk Assessment
  • Quality & Business Improvement Techniques

NOTE: Actual Units offered may vary

Appropriate learning methods will be selected; they will be student centred and include practical problem solving. Learning will consist of taught lessons, investigations, projects and assignments. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of each unit's outcomes in a variety of ways. These may include assignments, timed assessments, and course work. Assignments will encourage students to draw upon individual experiences and expertise, encourage research with evaluation. Assessment methods will vary depending upon the unit content.

Assessment and Progression:
The college is committed to maintaining Records of Achievement and providing appropriate feedback through action planning.

Progression
The college now offers the HND in Engineering (Manufacturing or Mechanical). Students can also achieve a Foundation or Full Degree by completing further study.

Duration:
This part-time day release course lasts for two years; Year 1 is on a Monday and Year 2 is on a Tuesday.
