Course Summary:
The part-time Counselling Concepts Certificate at Nescot is a 10-week course which uses a group setting to introduce you to some of the skills used in the counselling process such as effective listening. The course also provides, through the content and processes, an opportunity for you to understand what counselling entails and how it differs from other helping activities. You will also develop further self-awareness and enhanced self-confidence.
The course programme will reflect aspects of the counselling process and includes a range of self-awareness exercises, short role plays and experiential learning.

Course Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
- have a basic understanding of what counselling is about and how it differs from other forms of helping.
- have some basic skills to further improve their own communication processes.
- understand more clearly what counselling training entails and be able to make a more informed choice as to whether or not they wish to undertake vocational counselling training or other types of training.
- providing they meet the assessment criteria, be entitled to receive an ABC Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Concepts.
Note: This course provides an understanding of some of the basic skills used in the counselling process. It does not prepare participants to practise as counsellors, or to be competent in the use of counselling skills. However, successful completion can be used as a part requirement for access onto a more advanced course.
Assessment
- A range of informal assessments through observation, discussion, role play etc. to ensure the course learning outcomes have been met.
- A written reflective account (1500 words) about what the course has meant to the student and his or her understanding of it.
Career Progression:
Successful completion of the course can be used as a part requirement for access onto a more advanced course.
Fees:
Tuition fee 99; registration fee 38; college affiliation fee 25. The tuition fee can be waived for students on a means tested benefit.
