The Part-time MA Degree course is designed to meet the needs and interests of adult learners. It is a flexible course which allows you to combine degree level study with work or family commitments.

You can choose from a range of subject areas which lead to the award of an MA Degree with or without Honours. We draw on modules from the Humanities and Social Sciences and each year new modules are offered according to student interest and academic developments.

The MA Degree is awarded on completion of a minimum of 360 credits and the MA Honours degree is awarded on the completion of 480 credits. If you undertake an average of two modules per semester, you can complete an MA Degree in four and a half years and an MA Honours Degree in six years. This period could be shorter however if you can transfer credit from previous study towards your degree (see below) or if you undertake an online module over the summer period.

About this course

The majority of students undertaking the Part-time MA Degree are already in employment and several have retired. Many have found that by undertaking degree level study that their confidence has grown and that they have transferred many of the skills they have developed while studying to other areas of their lives to achieve career progression or to go on to further study at postgraduate level.

Admission is based on your application, personal statement, relevant experience, references and interview.
Students should normally be over 18 years of age. All of our Level 1 modules are open to all students, regardless of educational background.
Students who wish to enroll directly on Level 2 or level 3 modules should be able to demonstrate evidence of recent study and/or an ability to undertake study at these Levels.

Course programme

How you will be taught

Teaching normally takes place in small groups of up to 20 students to encourage discussion and sharing of ideas and experience. Tutors will have different styles and methods of teaching but you can expect to take part in lectures, tutorial discussions, workshops where students are asked to work together on a topic, group work and individual study.

How you will be assessed

Each subject module will use a range of different methods to assess your progress. The majority of our modules are assessed through coursework which may take the form of essays, written reports, and seminar presentations.

What you will study

Modules progress from Level 1 through to Level 4. When making your choices it is important to remember that in order to undertake a Level 2 module you should normally have completed a Level 1 module in the same subject area, likewise with Level 3 and Level 4 modules.

Level 1 and Level 2 modules are worth 20 credits each. Level 3 and Level 4 modules are worth 30 credits each. You can take a maximum of 110 credits in one academic year or as little as 40 credits. Most students choose to undertake two modules per semester.

Teaching sessions (lectures, seminars and workshops) are timetabled between 09:00 and 21:00, Monday to Friday.

As a part-time student you can choose from a wide range of modules from a number of disciplines.

Modules with evening provision will be clearly marked in the module pages for 2018/19. Some lectures may be available for you to view online with seminars and workshops held in the evening.

It may also be possible for you to gain credits towards the MA Degree by taking evening modules in Languages or the on-line Career Planning module. There is also the option of taking evening modules at the University of St Andrews, with whom a formal agreement has been established. The Programme Director will be happy to discuss all of these options with you.
