The ASET Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Care is a Vocationally Related Qualification (VRQ) designed to provide students with essential knowledge of the skills required to offer the best professional approach to caring for people who have dementia. The programme is designed for individuals who either are currently working, or plan to work, as employees or volunteers in care environments such as hospitals, residential and respite care homes, day care centres and in the service users own homes. It is applicable for those who are already working in the care sector to develop their skills in the workplace or for career progression. Equally, for newly appointed employees, those returning to work in the care sector after a career break and volunteers who care for people with dementia. • Develop an awareness of the different support agencies available
  • Develop a clear vision about their role in caring for people with dementia

Course Content:
The course comprises three units: Unit 01: Understanding dementia (25% weighting of assessment) In this unit, you will learn about the more common types of dementia, how the brain is affected and how to recognise the wide range of symptoms. • Identify causes and symptoms of different dementias
  • Explain current treatments applicable and approaches helpful for people with dementia

Unit 02: Understanding the practical help available for people with dementia (25% weighting of assessment) In this unit, you will study the different support agencies available to assist people with dementia and their families. Also, in addition to your own role, you will study roles and responsibilities of a wide range of carers involved in supporting people with dementia. You will explore a range of charities and financial grants available to people with dementia, their carers and their families, which alleviate some of the problems encountered. Finally, you will learn about the person-centred care approach that is used as a support mechanism for people with dementia. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the various roles in dementia care
  • Identify charities, grants and financial support available
  • Explain the practical help that can be offered through person-centred care

Unit 03: Caring for people with dementia (50% weighting of assessment) In this unit you will learn more about how you can assist people with dementia through a well proven method of person-centred care by focusing on considering your feelings for the people you care for, their feelings and those of their families. You will learn about how to build more effective relationships through effective communication skills. Finally, you will learn about guidelines for recognising possible signs of abuse of the people you are caring for and procedures for reporting any incidences in order to help prevent abuse.
