New CLAiT is suitable for beginners looking to boost their IT confidence. It equips learners with the basic range of transferable skills necessary to meet the demands of the modern workplace. Over 2 million people in the UK now hold CLAiT certificates, making CLAiT the benchmark qualification in IT. Each unit of New CLAiT is certificated separately and is regarded as a worthwhile achievement in its own right, meaning learners have the option of achieving as many or as few units as are appropriate for their own learning needs or employment situation. For learners who wish to achieve the New CLAiT Level 1 Certificate for IT Users qualification, Unit 1 (File Management and e-Document Production) plus any other two units must be successfully completed. To achieve the Level 1 Diploma, learners must achieve Unit 1 plus any other four units.

Course Content:
In this unit learners will learn how to use Microsoft Publisher 2003 to create a template for their publication, work with columns, add text frames and pictures. Learners will develop familiarity with the software, along with a sound understanding of basic desktop publishing concepts and the use of page layout tools. Learning Outcomes: Learners successfully passing this unit will be able to:

    Entry Requirements:
    There are no minimum entry requirements. However, some learners may find it beneficial to have completed Unit 1: File Management and e-Document Production before this unit. Learners must be 16 years of age or over on 31 August prior to the start of the course.

    Entry Process:
    There is no interview required.

    Assessment:
    Learners will be assessed by means of a practical assignment at the end of the study period. The assignment will be set in a realistic scenario and will be designed to allow learners to use their knowledge and understanding to demonstrate skill in each assessment objective in a logical and realistic way. Neither the Certificate/Diploma nor the individual units are graded. Learners who do not achieve a Pass may re-take the assessment using a different assignment.

    Progression Routes:
    Learners who wish to extend their skills at Level 1 will be able to progress to other units in the New CLAiT qualification. Those learners who wish to broaden their IT User skills in the workplace will be able to progress to the NVQ Level 1 for IT Users and will have a basis for progression to the NVQ Level 2 for IT Users.
