Hairdressing Level 1 NVQ
This course leads to a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 1 and is designed for those with an interest in pursuing a career in hairdressing. The course aims to provide students with an insight into the hairdressing industry by offering them the opportunity to gain basic skills and knowledge in this vocational area. Students successfully completing this qualification will be equipped with the skills to assist qualified stylists in the day-to-day activities of salon life, including shampooing and conditioning, assisting with chemical services, reception, and health and safety aspects. The knowledge gained, and skills acquired, will prepare students for the Diploma Level 2 in Hairdressing or NVQ Level 2 in Barbering (although students will be required to apply and be re-interviewed for these courses if they wish to progress).

Course Content:
The course comprises five mandatory units and two optional units. Students must complete a minimum of six units (the five mandatory units and one optional unit) to achieve the full qualification.

Mandatory Units:

• Unit G1 Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
• Unit G3 Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
• Unit H1 Shampoo and condition hair
• Unit H5 Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
• Unit H37 Assisting with colouring services

Optional Units:

• Unit G2 Assist with salon reception duties
• Unit H38 Assisting with perming and neutralising

Students will be expected to adhere to the salon dress code and act professionally at all times whilst attending college.

Work Experience / Practical Experience:
Not compulsory, but firmly advised to gain valuable experience in this ever changing industry. Please note however, there may be instances where places on the course will be offered with the proviso that students have a work placement. These will be instances where it is thought, for a variety or reasons, that the candidate will need this experience run along side their course in order to benefit from full achievement of the qualification. Reasons will always be explained to the candidate on interview.

Attendance Requirements:
This course is offered as a full time one year course combined with Certificate in Salon Services or as a part time short course (One day per week for 16 weeks).

Entry Requirements:
Applicant's applying for the full time combined hairdressing (NVQ Level 1 plus Certificate in Salon Services) should have:

• At least four GCSEs at grade E, have an interest
/ passion for hairdressing, be of smart appearance and have good interpersonal skills. Applicants applying for the 16 week fast track short course in NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing should have:
• At least four GCSEs at Grade D or above and a satisfactory level of literacy and numeracy
. Acceptance is subject to an interview.

Accreditation of Prior Learning / Experience:
This will be used if appropriate and discussed at interview and induction.

Entry Process:
An interview with the course tutor will be arranged at the earliest opportunity after receiving your application.You will be interviewed to assess your interest and passion for hairdressing, personal presentation and interpersonal skills.

Assessment:
Students will be assessed by a combination of the following methods:
• Observation
• Written questions and assignments
• Simulation
• Case studies


Progression Routes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students may progress, subject to interview, to the Level 2 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing (City & Guilds 6902-01) full time.

Career Options:
Upon successful completion of this qualification you may seek employment as an apprentice in a salon and undertake a NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or Barbering (City & Guilds 3014) on a part-time basis with the College.
