Career Prospects and Progression

While there are currently not many full time jobs in counselling, the training is helpful to all who work in the helping professions or who want to increase their skills and awareness when working with others in a caring role. It is valued by employers and students, for the professional development it offers. It is an appropriate course for those who want to work solely as a professional counsellor. Former students are currently working as counsellors in the health service, education and voluntary organisations, both part-time and full-time.

Modules

Ist Year (Level 4): Personal Development 1, Counselling Theory 1, Learning Strategies & Technology, Counselling Practice and Professional Development 1. Total - 80 credits 2nd year (Level 4/Level 5 as specified): Personal Development 2 (Level 4), Counselling Theory 2 (Level 5), Counselling Practice and Professional Development 2 (Level 5). Overall total - 160 credits 3rd year (Level 5): Personal Development 3, Counselling Theory, Counselling Practice and Professional Development 3, Overall total - 240 credits

Method of Assessment

Continual assessment, and there is no examination.

Course Length

One day a week over three years. Plus a supervised placement of about three hours a week in the second and third years. Students are also asked to attend a one day course on another day of the week to their normal day on three occasions. 10 hours of personal therapy are also required. In second and third years there are away days.
