About this course

Applicants will need some previous training in counselling. Completion of the Colleges Certificate in Further Counselling Skills would be acceptable, as would other equivalent qualifications. Experience of counselling within your workplace or in the voluntary sector would be advantageous. Acceptance on to the course will be subject to a successful interview with the course leader(s). Students must be at least 25 years of age at the beginning of the course. People who have been addicted to alcohol or other substances should be clean for at least two years before commencing the course. Acceptance onto the course is subject to a successful interview with the course tutor.

Humanistic Counselling WKC Diploma
This course is designed for students who have completed a one year Counselling Skills course, or equivalent. The course is suitable for people interested in becoming trained counsellors, either in order to become independent counsellors or to use their skills in their work setting. By the end of the course it is envisaged that graduates will be skilled counsellors at a beginning level of competence.

Course Content:
There are four components to the course:

  • Theory
  • Experiential learning
  • Skills practice
  • Personal development
  • In the second year there is more emphasis on supervision and live skills assessment.

    Awarding body:
    The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants will need some previous training in counselling. Completion of the Colleges Certificate in Further Counselling Skills would be acceptable, as would other equivalent qualifications. Experience of counselling within your workplace or in the voluntary sector would be advantageous. Acceptance on to the course will be subject to a successful interview with the course leader(s). Students must be at least 25 years of age at the beginning of the course.     Entry Process:
    Applicants will be invited to attend an interview. The interview is an important aspect of the selection process. Candidates will need to demonstrate emotional maturity, academic interest and a reasonable level of openness to working on themselves.

    Assessment:
    Assessment includes essays, self-assessments, case studies, project, live assessment of practical skills and a presentation. Students must also keep a personal journal for the duration of the course.

    Progression Routes:
    This course would provide the entry requirement for many psychotherapy trainings for those students who may wish to progress to a career in this area.

    Career Options:
    Graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling are currently in paid employment as counsellors within the NHS, in Customs and Excise, and in private and state education. Others work in private practice and in addiction rehabilitation.
