NEBOSH General Certificate NGC1
The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989. The course is aimed at managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisation who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the course as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study. The qualification meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). It is accredited at Level 3 within the National Qualification Framework (NQF) by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England. Successful students will be awarded a certificate with the accredited title of the qualification: NEBOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Course Content:
The qualification is divided into three units:

  • NGC1 Management of Health and Safety
  • NGC2 Controlling Workplace Hazards
  • NGC3 Practical Health and Safety exam

Each of the first two units NGC1 and NGC2 is divided into a number of elements. NGC1 Management of Health and Safety This unit will consist of the following elements:

  • : Construction activities hazards and control NGC3 Health and safety practical application The aim of this unit is to assess a candidates ability to complete successfully two activities:
  • To carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary, suggesting appropriate and cost effective remedial action
  • .
  • To prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action, explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of legislation) and identifying, with due consideration of reasonable practicability, the remedial measures that should be implemented

    Vocational Relevance:
    Successful students will have demonstrated a broad base of knowledge and understanding of health and safety such that they can manage their everyday activities safely with health and safety as an integral part rather than a bolt-on extra.

    Awarding body:
    National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).
    Entry Requirements:
    No previous health and safety knowledge is required but students must be able to write short reports. Some applicants may be requested to attend an informal interview, dependent on health and safety experience.Applicants must have a good standard of literacy and numeracy.

    Entry Process:
    Applicants may be invited to a personal interview with the course tutor, or a telephone interview will be arranged at the earliest opportunity.

    Assessment:
    Units NGC1 and NGC2 are taught units each assessed by one two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten short-answer questions and one long-answer question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. Unit NGC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination. This is held on a date set by the College and must be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by the College and externally moderated by NEBOSH.

    The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. designed to provide the knowledge and understanding that underpins competent performance as an occupational health and safety practitioner.
