Course Summary:
The course has been designed with the co-operation of the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland (SOPGI) and working professional perfusion scientists. It will enable students to gain either a PGC, a PGD or an MSc in Perfusion Science. The course addresses both academic and professional needs by integrating academic knowledge and understanding with the practical requirements of the working professional perfusion scientist and the demands of SOPGI for professional registration and accreditation.

The emphasis of the course is on cardiothoracic physiology and pathology and cardiopulmonary bypass.

The Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland (SOPGI) has accredited the PGD course in Perfusion Science for registration purposes.

This course is open to international students providing that they have obtained a clnical placement in a department of perfusion in the UK. The college will not be responsible for arranging this placement.

Course Details:
Students will attend college for nine one-week blocks each academic year, spaced out at approximately monthly intervals. The course is designed in a series of modules, each of which has 15 level M credits. The total MSc course has a credit rating of 180 credits (8 taught modules and a research project of 60 M level credits); the PGD of 120 credits (8 taught modules) and the PGC of 60 credits (4 taught modules).

In each academic year six blocks will cover core material (three modules), and two blocks will be devoted to specialist study in perfusion science (one module). The concentration of the teaching of the specialist material in perfusion science in two discrete blocks will facilitate the teaching and learning associated with the highly specialised topics in perfusion, as the delivery of this work will largely involve hospital based staff, expertise and equipment.

Career Progression:
It is intended that students who successfully complete the PGD course in Perfusion Science will receive professional registration and accreditation from SOPGI after the successful completion of the practical examination and a viva voce examination with SOPGI. These students will thus acquire professional status as perfusion scientists from which their subsequent career will progress.

It is anticipated that most of the students on these programmes of study will be trainee perfusion scientists working in the NHS who after successful completion of this course and registration and accreditation by SOPGI will acquire professional status as perfusion scientists from which their subsequent career will progress.

The course is also designed for experienced perfusionists who wish to extend their academic qualifications.

Other Information:
There is an increasing demand in the UK for professionally registered perfusion scientists who have successfully attended an appropriate recognised and accredited programme of study in perfusion science. This course has been designed in conjunction with SOPGI and working professional perfusion scientists to meet this demand.

Requirement
Students commencing this programme will normally be working in a clinical environment as a perfusion scientist. The following entry requirements would usually apply: Employment as a Perfusion Scientist, plus one of the following: An honours degree or postgraduate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline awarded by a British HE Institution. The qualification would normally be in a relevant biological science, but other subjects such as chemistry or physical science may be appropriate if accompanied by relevant clinical experience. Qualifications from overseas universities and other institutions deemed to be of equivalent standing. Lower levels of academic achievement may be accepted if accompanied by substantial professional achievement within the guidelines specified by the Credit Accumulation and Transfer scheme (CATS) regulations for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Students whose first language is not English will need to provide acceptable evidence of English Proficiency.
