Course aims:
You will explore photographic techniques, equipment & materials. Acquiring basic camera techniques you will apply your skills to photographic projects relating your own work to that of famous photographers as we examine how some photographs stand apart from others. You will create a portfolio of work based on your interpretation of set briefs as you hone your skills to take photos that tell us something about the world around us.
From dramatically lit studio portraits to documentary reportage you will attain a range of skills reflecting the many areas of modern photography. The final part of the course is open to you to form your own photographic project using techniques learnt to produce a themed piece of work that reflects your own specialist interest.
In order to achieve the qualification you need to successfully complete both units. Each unit is graded pass, merit or distinction. The course provides keen students with an excellent preparation for a Level II course.

Course content:
On this course you will learn about:
  • Photography techniques (shutter speed & aperture)
  • B&W developing & printing
  • Studio photography
  • Digital retouching and digital design (this will be encompassed within the two units)


Facilities for students:
  • Black & White Darkroom,
  • Photographic studio & lighting equipment,
  • Computer suite.


Assessment: Assessment is by workbooks, showing assignments completed over the year.

Progression and links:
A body of work produced on the course could be part of a portfolio used to get a place on a full time level III course in photography or a related subject.
Portfolio images should show competence in film, digital and studio based practise which could assist in working within the photographic industry.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 350.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
