Progressive Personal Awareness Certificate
This course is aimed at those who have successfully completed a Certificate level counselling course, such as the Colleges own Certificate in Further Counselling Skills. The course has been principally developed for students who wish to continue their personal development but who do not necessarily want to undertake a Diploma level course (such as the Colleges Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling) immediately. As a result, previous students have found the PPA to be an excellent preparatory course before entry to our Advanced Diploma programme.

  • : To examine students own development and look at ways of living more resourcefully and satisfactorily.
  • Self-awareness
  • : To acquire some insights into who we are and what has shaped us.
  • Methods
  • : Creative ways of exploring the self; using the power of imagination; experiencing other ways of being.
  • Relationships
  • : Group work is an essential element of the course, modelling how we can be with others. Please note that there is a minimum age requirement of 25 years for this course.

    Course Content:
    The course comprises the following four elements: Personal development This may include the following subjects:
  • Self-evaluation
  • Refining communication skills
  • Developing advanced empathy
  • Trust in self and others
  • Managing disclosure
  • Taking responsibility for self and others
  • Managing change
Self-awareness The aim is to grow towards:
  • Recognising and accepting aspects of self
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Learning to be assertive
  • Willingness to work with personal issues
  • Discovering and challenging personal boundaries
Methods The course aims to pursue the following:
  • Whole group check-ins
  • Paired and small group discussion
  • Individual creative work
  • Individual and group imaginative work
  • Examining life myths
  • Examining life journeys
  • Reflection and journal-keeping
  • Safety and exploration


Relationships:
Students embarking on this course must be willing to embark on a process of learning not only about themselves but also about others and their relationship with them. Consequently there will need to be a commitment to a learning agreement, arrived at by negotiation between students and the tutor, requiring absolute confidentiality regarding others material.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be 25 or over, and must have completed the Further Certificate in Counselling Skills, or an equivalent qualification. Entry Process:
Applicants must be 25 or over, and must have completed the Further Certificate in Counselling Skills, or an equivalent qualification. In certain cases, applicants may be invited to interview in order to assess their suitability for the course.

Assessment:
Assessment is based on a personal journal, a 1,500 word autobiography with tutorial, and empathic practice (continuous assessment of one-to-one interactions with others in the group). Students must satisfactorily complete all assessment criteria.

Progression Routes:
This course is a resource for those wishing to continue their personal development beyond that offered by the Certificate in Further Counselling Skills. The hope is that students will then go on to continue that process throughout their lives.
