The Course
This course is for those who wish to become qualified in the trade of bricklaying. It is intended for candidates who have little or no previous experience as well as those who have site experience but no recognised qualification.

At the end of the second year, candidates can achieve an NVQ Level 2 awarded by the Construction Industry Training Board and City and Guilds, working together as the Construction Awards Alliance.

The target duration of the course is two years, attending for one day each week. Candidates who possess the appropriate Intermediate Construction Award will aim to complete in one year.

The NVQ consists of three elements, all of which are included in the course.

The first element to be assessed is Underpinning Knowledge, which will be delivered on the college site. The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge which underpins the five mandatory units [Conform to workplace safety; Conform to efficient work practices; and Move and handle resources; Erect masonry structures; and Set out masonry structures] and one of the Optional Units which will be offered eg Erect thin joint masonry structures; Erect masonry cladding.

The second element is the Portfolio of Evidence from workplace activity, which is assessed in the workplace by a college assessor, and which demonstrates a candidates practical competency in the workplace.

The third essential element is an external Health and Safety unit which is assessed on-line.

In order to achieve the NVQ qualification all candidates must be able to prepare and present a work based evidence portfolio of site experience On site experience is a requirement for the assessment of the NVQ units. (It may be possible that the College may be able to assist students in finding suitable on site experience

Both theoretical and practical aspects of these subjects are studied and candidates are encouraged to make full use of the departments extensive range of learning facilities and workshops. Modes of tuition include practical work and assessments with student based learning packages in the second year. All candidates on NVQ courses undertake an extensive amount of 'hands-on' workshop training and are required to achieve a range of practical competencies which have been designed to develop the personal skills that are necessary for a career in the construction industry.

The department has close contacts with local industry and relevant advice is sought and used in the development of courses so that the subjects studied relate to the vocational requirements of industry.

Assessment/Exams
Assessment is based on assignments, practical competence testing and questioning. A proportion of the assessment will be carried out in the workplace.

Progression/Career Path
Trade qualifications provide a sound basis for further career development and students may progress to the BTEC Course for a career in the management side of the industry.
