About this course
You don't need any formal qualification or experience of computer hardware. You do need a basic level of English and Maths If you need help with your English or Maths, the College can provide you with support at a time to suit you, which will bring you up to the required standard whilst studying your chosen course.

Introduction:
This course is designed to allow candidates to demonstrate understanding of the processes involved in installing, configuring and upgrading computer systems both hardware and software. They demonstrate an awareness of health and safety issues surrounding the maintenance and installation of computer systems. In addition, candidates will recognise techniques for effective communication with others to support their role as a computer service technician.
Study Mode & Location:
This Part Time Evening courses last for 30 weeks & sessions last for 3 hours each at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, Preston, PR2 8UR. Due to the practical nature of the course any additional time spent practicing away from College will help you achieve a better understanding, but there is no formal requirement to work at home.
Course Content:
During this practical course you look at:
· Building a computer
· Installation of the motherboard,
· Floppy/hard drives and CD-ROM,
· Video cards.
· Installing and managing Windows operating systems.
· Adding peripherals and multimedia capabilities.
· Knowledge of local-area network architecture,
· Networking protocols and the OSI Model, and TCP/IP utilities.
· Connecting the computer to a local area network and to the Internet.
Assessment:
Students are assessed via a Cisco-set online multiple choice test and a practical skills test.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Students can progress from this course as follows: OCNW level 2 â€-A' unit Certificate in operating systems, OCNW level 2 â€-A' unit Certificate in networking, OCNW level 2 â€-A' unit Certificate in Personal computer hardware. iPro OCR certificate for IT practitioners (ICT system support) level 3 to HNC / HND or Foundation Degree.
How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with an Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
