Who will need to do the test?

The English Language Test is for All new and renewal drivers who are not from a majority English speaking country.

All new and renewal applicants for the TfL Private Hire Licence from the 1st October 2016 will need to provide evidence of their ability to communicate in English. This will include Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

TfL has also set a transition time, which means new and renewal applicants will get their private hire licence but will have until the end of March 2017 to provide sufficient certification or proof of their ability to communicate in English.

Applicants from the 1st of April 2017 will need to have the evidence ready at the time of applying to become a Private Hire Driver in London.
